Registration week for Travel the 50 States summer reading program wraps up tomorrow for kids ages 2–12, but children may continue to join the program all summer long by decorating their automobile posters and filling in reading logs. For each eight books read, they will receive prizes and for the first 20 books read, children will receive coupons from Building Blocks Art Supplies & Gallery (Ridgefield) valued at $5. Kids will have a summer’s worth of crafts, story times, musical entertainment, live animal programs and much more with the Travel the 50 States program. The first of the crafts and story times activities begins next week. On Monday, June 23, from 10 a.m.–8 p.m., kids can enjoy Monday Drop-In Crafts in which they create crafts every week based on the theme of the week, in this case, Appalachia. Materials are supplied by the library and there is no registration. Drop-In Crafts take place through August 11. Also on Monday, from 6–6:30 p.m., children ages 2–6 can come to the library in their jammies for Sleepytime Story Time. They’ll hear gentle bedtime stories right before they go home to their cozy beds. Children under the age of 4 must be accompanied by adults; ages 4–6 must have adults in the building. Additional dates for Sleepytime Story Time are July 7, 21 and Aug. 4. There is no charge or registration. Tuesday Story Times begin June 24 and run through Aug. 12 at the following times: Ones and Twos with caregivers, 10:15 – 10:45; Twos and Threes with caregivers, 11–11:30; Threes and Fours on their own, 11:45–12:15; Fives through Eights, 2–2:45. Book club for kidsTravel the 50 States Kids’ Book Club begins its on Tuesday, June 24, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. for children entering grades 3–6. Children can choose their weekly themed books from a suggested reading list provided by the Children’s Library, then come to the library to chat about their books. Each meeting will have a different topic as follows: June 24 Appalachia; July 15 Mississippi River, July 29 New Orleans; and Aug. 12 New Frontier. Children will have activities and a light supper. Wednesday WondersWild Goose Nation, a string band specializing in traditional American music, will perform at the first Travel the 50 States Wednesday Wonders on June 25, from 3–4 p.m. The three musicians who play a multitude of instruments learned their music from some of the master tradition bearers of Appalachian, African-American, Cajun, French-Canadian and Irish-American culture. There is no charge for the program and no advance registration. The first 150 people (children and caregivers) will be admitted. Children must be accompanied by adults. Registration begins a half hour before the program. This musical program for children is sponsored by the Fannie M. Lienhard Fund. Teen thingsTeens have some fun things to do in the next week ranging from photo contests to body collages. On Monday, June 23, the “Gotcha Reading” Teen Photo Contest begins for students entering grades 7–12 and 2008 high school graduates. Kids can submit 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 photos of people reading. Prizes will be awarded for the most humorous photo; most artistic; and most original place found reading. Submissions will be accepted from June 23 through July 25, with the photos going on display in the library in August. Photos should be submitted at the Teen desk, or the circulation desk if the Teen desk is closed. Submission forms should be completed for each photo. On Wednesdays beginning June 25, from 4–5 p.m., kids can stop by the library for an informal roundtable chat with other kids about the books they are reading. Snacks will be provided. There is no registration with this program. For those wishing to stretch their creativity, Body Collage for Teens takes place on Thursday, June 26, from 3–5 p.m. Kids entering grades 7-12 will create life-size images of themselves using paper, markers, yarn, fabric and other resources.
