The summer reading program, Travel the 50 States, is in full-swing now, with crafts and story times this week, and a Country Fair set for next week. On Friday, June 27, from 3–5 p.m., Lesley Keogh, Children’s Library assistant, provides an outlet for kids’ creativity with various themed craft workshops. The program is for children entering grades 2 and up. Additional workshop dates: July 18 and Aug. 1. There is no charge and no advance registration. Drop-In Crafts for kids of all ages are on Mondays during library hours through Aug. 11. Kids can come in and make crafts based on the theme of the week. Samples are provided to spur on the kids’ creativity. Supplies are free and there is no registration. Drop-In Story Times take place on Tuesdays through Aug. 12 in the following age groups and times: Ones and Twos with caregivers, 10:15–10:45; Twos and Threes with caregivers, 11–11:30; Threes and Fours on their own, 11:45–12:15; and Fives through Eights, 2–2:45. On Monday, July 7, little ones, ages 2–6, can come to the library in their pajamas for Sleepytime Story Time, from 6–6:30 p.m. to hear some bedtime stories. Children can bring their blankets and teddy bears, curl up and listen to these gentle stories before they head off to their own beds for pleasant dreams. Children under the age of 4 must be accompanied by adults. A Country Fair, complete with games, fortune telling, food, and agricultural exhibits, makes for a great afternoon, from 2–4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9. Teen stuffFor the teens in the household, there are plenty of things to keep them busy at the library over the next few weeks, starting with X-Box for Teens, from 4–6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 15 and 22. Kids entering grades 7–12 can play a guitar, sing a song or try the drums when they come and play “Rock Band” on the library’s new X-Box 360 System. They can enjoy a live teen rock band and jazz band on Thursday, July 17 at 5:30, when the Summer Music & More Concert Series features two teen bands, Vivacity and Hip Six. Every Wednesday through Aug. 13, kids entering grades 7–12 can come to the library for an informal chat about books they have read. Teen Book Talk, from 4–5 p.m., gives them a chance to talk to other kids about books that have really held their interest. The informal session includes snacks, of course. Teens will learn how to tie dye a T-shirt on Tuesday, July 8, from 3–5 p.m. Teen assistant Whitney Walker will help kids using materials supplied by the library. There is no charge for the program. Visiting Author talks sportsAuthor Frank Deford, senior contributing writer for Sports Illustrated, discusses his latest novel released in paperback, The Entitled, on Tuesday, July 8, from 7–8:30 p.m. According to Publisher’s Weekly, sportswriter, screenwriter and author Deford “tackles timely and provocative issues without flinching.” Deford's weekly sports commentary can be heard on Wednesday mornings on NPR's Morning Edition. Summer concert series beginsChance Browne and the Twinkies open the 8th annual Summer Music & More Concert Series on Thursday, July 10, from 5–6:30 p.m. The blues/funk band is popular among summer concertgoers and promises another rousing start to the courtyard concert season at the library. This will be the eighth straight year in which The Village Market has generously sponsored the musicfest. Additional dates and performers are: July 17 Teen Bands— Vivacity (rock) and Hip Six (jazz); July 24 Steve D’Agostino (music from the Rat Pack era); July 31 In Harmony (oldies vocal group). The concerts happen rain or shine with the Brubeck Room used for the rain location. The concerts are free and open to the public, and free refreshments will be served.
