The summer is in full swing with more story times and crafts for the upcoming weeks. Travel the 50 States Drop-In Crafts are on Mondays from 10–8 through Aug. 11 for children of all ages. Kids can make Travel the 50 States themed crafts following the samples that are set up each week. On Monday, July 7 and 21, children ages 2–6 are welcome to Sleepytime Story Times, from 6–6:30 p.m. They can come to the library in their pajamas, listen to sweet stories then head home for sweeter dreams. Visiting author talks sportsFrank Deford, author and senior contributing writer for Sports Illustrated, visits the library on Tuesday, July 8, from 7–8:30 p.m. to discuss his new paperback book, The Entitled. According to Library Journal, “The outcomes of the many subplots will generate surprise, delight, and disappointment and will sharply divide the members of any reading club-as one would expect with a story that is so true to life.” Books will be available for purchase and signing, provided by the Wilton Open Book Shop. Country fair (minus the hay)Following the theme of the summer reading program, Travel the 50 States, the Children’s Library is hosting a Country Fair on Wednesday, July 9, from 2–4 p.m. Kids will be treated to a great assortment of fun things to do, including games, a doughnut eating contest, a pet contest (pictures only—no pets, please), balloon animals and a lesson in pet care. Children of all ages are invited. There is no charge and registration is not necessary. The Country Fair is sponsored by the Sherman Family Fund.
Courtyard concerts beginThe library’s 8th annual Summer Music & More Concert Series opens on Thursday, July 10, from 5 – 6:30 p.m. with perennial favorite, Chance Browne and the Twinkies. The popular funk/blues band is headlining the concert series for the eighth straight year. The series is sponsored by the Village Market, the featured sponsor since the concerts began. Additional performers and dates are: July 17 Teen bands Vivacity from Stamford with Maria Battinelli (vocals), Steve Lorusso (bass), Garrett Hickey (guitar/vocals) and Gary Fanali (drums) and Hip Six, a jazz band from Redding, with Gene Leone (guitar), Ben Katz (trombone), Dan Lipsitz (saxophone), Isabelle Miner (vocals), and Billy Indelicato (bass); July 24 Steve D’Agostino and his “Singin’ & Swingin’” band, Dave Scrofani – piano, Geno Heiter – bass, Marc D'Agostino – drums; July 31 In Harmony with Dee Heavrin (vocals) and Robin Miller (vocals) both of Danbury; Adrienne Lisko (vocals), Naugatuck/Waterbury; Scott Poarch (bass/baritone), Newtown; Peter Randazzo (vocals and keyboard), Trumbull; and Lenny Seiter (tenor), Brookfield. The concert series is outdoors in the East Courtyard, with a full complement of refreshments. In the event of rain, the concerts will be held in the Brubeck Room. Art show openingThe library’s 64th annual Summer Art Show opens to the public with a reception on Friday, July 11, from 6–7:30 p.m. The popular exhibit features more than 50 Wilton artists with a variety of subject matter and techniques, including oils, watercolors, pastels, drawings and sculptures. The majority of works will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibit runs through Friday, Aug. 29.
Jazz in JulyJohn Salmon, a classical and jazz pianist, performs live at the library on July 12, at 7:30 p.m. for a special Saturday night Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room. Salmon has become increasingly involved with American composer and jazz artist, Dave Brubeck, writing about him and playing his music. A reception follows the evening’s performance. Suggested donation is $10 per person. The Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room series is funded by William and Karen Tell Foundation with generous support from Ed and Catherine Romer. Advance registration is strongly recommended and pre-registrants must arrive by 7:20 p.m. to be guaranteed seating.
